James Tutton’s Coburg House

Architecture - by Open Journal

The relationship between developer and architect has been extended to include the renovation of Neometro Director James Tutton’s own home at 23 The Grove, Coburg by Clare Cousins Architects.

With James moving onto a new private project in the up-and-coming suburb, the property hit the market with Kay & Burton and Jellis Craig this week, giving homebuyers and architecture buffs a rare glimpse inside the historic northside Italianate mansionette.

Having worked with Clare on the Jewell Station project, James was keen for the talented architect to bring the circa 1887 property back to spectacular contemporary life.

According to Clare, when it came to the design of the home, James wanted everything to be done to a high standard.

“From the scale and design detail in the walk-in robes to the imported Belgian linen drapes, the choice of interior colours, the opening out onto the northern gardens, this is fresh perspective on a period home,” Clare says.

James says the renovation was completed six months ago and includes re-landscaping of the expansive gardens.

“Without doubt, it’s very unusual to be on the edge of Melbourne’s buzzing inner north and have a property of this scale with huge north facing gardens, pool and a Victorian tower.”

Likely to appeal to a wide variety of buyers, from eastern suburban downsizers and professionals needing to be close to the CBD, to inner-north families wanting more land, the home is in a highly desirable location within a wide tree-lined street and only a short stroll to Sydney Rd shops and amenities.
